In Math, the GIVEN is the thing you start with. It’s a thing that you don’t have to prove or a thing that you can accept as reality. It’s a place to start, a rock upon which to build logically through reference and understanding.

When I was growing up, there were many things that I was lucky to count as GIVEN. I had a loving family, and a roof over my head. I always had food on the table, though I’ve only learned in later years that keeping it there maybe wasn’t as easy as I thought at the time. I had available healthcare if something went wrong, and a safe place to be at night. I am grateful that my parents provided these GIVENs and that I never had to worry about them.

I was able to build a life upon these stable GIVENs. I don’t have everything that I could have ever imagined, but I do pretty well. And I’m working to give my daughter those same securities.

But not everybody is as lucky.

It’s hard to build a safe and stable life when you don’t have that set of stable GIVENs to build upon. It’s hard to study math, science, and reading in school if you’re not sure you’re going to be safe when you get home. It’s hard to take an exam or do your homework when you’re not sure if there will be…
