While it is true that actions speak louder than words, sometimes words themselves have a flamboyance and an I do what I want attitude that not only flings a middle finger in the general direction of convention, but also doesn’t care whether or not you notice in a way that you just have to respect.

And today, I’m talking about those GNARLY words that just, apparently from pure cussedness, have decided to start with GN and just keep the first letter silent.

Of course, we’re all familiar with the unhumble Garden GNOME, which though it looks like it should be alliterative, brings the full force of you can fool some of the people some of the time, and screw the rest of them who aren’t paying attention.

From there, we get to GNOMIC, which looks like it should be “relating to GNOMES”, but is in fact “relating to aphorisms” which are concise sayings that relay a customary truth, something like the italicized phrases above or the words of the immortal Yoda that I GNARLED up a little for my own purposes in the subtitle.

There’s also the GNATHION which, from anatomy, is related to the place where you put your GNOCCHI which isn’t nearly as dirty as it sounds.
