After a week-long Spring Break, which most teachers in the district spent working on how to deal with the need to teach, support our own families, and stay healthy all at the same time, it was time to get back into actually teaching.

I saw my first student at 8:00 AM. It was earlier than usual, but I had my video call and coffee ready. We talked about the assignment and he asked a couple questions. We also talked about what was happening at his house and how he and his family were dealing with the current issues.

I cannot express how great it was to see this student and know that I could still be part of his educational experience.

I keep hearing (and reading) expressions like “the new normal”. Seeing his student was a little of my “old normal” which made me feel really good. I saw a few more students throughout the day, and corresponded via email with a few more.

I do not have it all figured out. I am quite sure that I am doing multiple things wrong, while probably accidentally doing some others right. But, if I can still be there for my students and still guide them, at least a little, through their education then I am still a teacher.
