I'm not a fan of this expression either, but there are others that hit more of a nerve. I used to dine out with some people who would start their order with "Give me...". Dude, you're paying for whatever this is. Ever since I learned French, I try to start that sentence with "I would like..." It feels more polite to me, and it's a translation of the often used French term. But, the language is what the language is. We might consider some phrases more lazy or inappropriate than others, but our language is going to evolve and change whether we like it or not.
