Maybe I’m Missing It

Let the math be your guide

Okay, I’m not a politician, but I do know how math works. There are 212 democrats, 221 republicans, 2 vacancies.

I will now attempt to explain as if I’m teaching middle school math. Despite all the 2’s in those numbers, if you read them correctly you can see which one is bigger. The republicans have a majority, but the democrats aren’t far behind.

If we add the numbers of voting members together (the vacancies don’t count), we get 433.

You have to divide that number in half to see what constitutes a majority. Here’s where it gets hard, it’s an ODD number. So if we divide it, we get 216 plus a remainder. You can’t have half a politician! So, the majority would need to be 217.

If the democrats want to have a majority, they only need to convince 5 people to vote their way. But that’s not going to happen because according to the republicans, the democrats are evil and want to take away their guns and turn them all gay. And voting that way would mean the end of their career in Congress which comes with all sorts of cushy deals and benefits.

But some members of Congress on both sides of that equation want to actually do the work they were hired to do like passing bills, helping…
