Schools Must Be Safe

How is it possible that part of the job isn’t keeping students safe?

As I’m cruising through Medium today, I see another great article by James Finn (linked below). In it, there is a quote about the situation at too many schools.

“Students at the school have told LGBTQ Nation that some of their teachers are part of a larger anti-queer bullying problem, saying school officials have told students they don’t “condone” LGBTQ+ relationships “around here.” — From James Finn’s article linked below.

When you’re a teacher, you absolutely must be required to keep your children safe. When I was studying for my degree, there was a term that came up several times “In loco parentis” which is Latin for “in place of parents.” It means that we are charged with acting as responsible adults when we are with those children, and we have to act at those times as if we were their parents. THAT MEANS WE HAVE TO PROTECT THEM. There should be no question and no two ways of thinking about that.

To hear about teachers who bully students, or even indicate to them that they don’t condone who they are is simply wrong. I like to think that I side with teachers most of the time because I know what it’s like to deal with out of control behavior, terrible grading…
