SMALL NOT INSIGNIFICANT

Start Small, It’s Okay

I know I’m not alone when I write that I haven’t written for a while. I know that I’m not alone with those other writers by my side who also have pages of unpublished ideas on their hard drives, memory sticks, or Medium accounts.

Strangely, it is when I feel most alone that I stop writing and join the group whose membership requires a sort of silence. When I feel that everything I say is full of hopelessness, I rejoin this club whose communication strategy is the lack of itself.

It takes effort to remind myself that I write to feel, and sometimes those feelings are good and sometimes they’re bad. It’s okay to be part of the larger club who write and express and get our ideas out into the world. It’s okay to put out some sadness so that others can shed helpful light on your burden. It’s okay to bring forward difficult ideas in case there is one person out there who will also now be less alone.

But, to do that you have to start.

You have to be okay with being just an ACORN. It’s okay to have only one this week, or month, or year. It’s okay to be new. It’s okay to be restarting, rebuilding, or rethinking. It’s even okay to take a break while you make sense of senselessness and adjust to new realities and feelings.

And so here is my ACORN. May it grow.
