There is an expression that just grinds me when I hear it. I know that it’s a common expression when someone wants to emphasize what they are saying next, and like many expressions in the English language doesn’t necessarily mean what it implies.

But, when I hear someone say “To tell you the truth” or it’s ugly step sister “I’ll be honest with you” it just makes me want to visibly cringe.

At the very least, I feel like asking weren’t you already telling me the truth?

But then I also want to add, Because if your speech has been so far peppered with lies and misgivings, should I believe anything you say?

Is it that the next six or seven words out of your mouth are the only ones that comprise the truth, and you have been feeding me a constant stream of bullshit since we started talking!?

Also, why is it NOW that you have decided to tell me the TRUTH? What is it in this supposed friendly conversation that we’ve been having led you to believe that you should be comfortable lying to me until some point in the middle? A point that you have now decided to punctuate with this linguistic earworm that indicates some defined conversational frontier and that henceforth we should now be honest with…
