EDUCATING WORDLE
Trading College
Get what’s best for your children
Today’s Wordle brings up a discussion that sometimes makes for a hard conversation with students and parents.
Some kids are not going to be successful in college.
We all want what’s best for our children. And, as teachers, we want what’s best for your children too. Sometimes what’s best for them is to understand where and when they will be successful and to have that honest conversation with them.
For many of my students, I encourage them into higher education. They are smart, hard-working students who have spent their high school careers learning how to complete tasks, study, and take exams. They are ready for the next level, and it makes sense for them to continue. It won’t be easy, and many of them will struggle with all the things that college brings, but for the most part I think the college experience will be worth it for them.
But, there are others who are “done with school”. They will tell me in their senior year that they are tired of studying and of having homework and of doing school things. That’s also a valid place to be and I encourage them to own that stance and be okay with it. As they enter adulthood they need to stand up for who they are and what they want to do.
