Enjoy wasting your time in order to not waste it
I don’t have a hobby. And I’m guessing that a lot of you don’t either. I suppose that you could consider writing a hobby, but that’s not really what I think of when I think of a hobby.
I think back to when I was growing up, people had hobbies like woodworking, gardening, or rock climbing. I haven’t heard anybody say that they have a hobby for a while. Maybe it’s because I’m antisocial, but maybe it’s because of the perceived value of something that’s called a hobby.
Traditionally, a hobby was something you did that brought you joy just by doing it. You did not do it to make money, or to gain something. You did not do it because it was related to your job, or because someone else thought you should do it. It was yours, and it was simply for fun.
I think we’ve gotten away from using the word “hobby” because it has a negative connotation that says you are wasting your time. I hear terms like pastime, personal activity, relaxation method, and stress relief which imply that the hobby also is accomplishing something. Sadly, I think we increasingly live in a world that if you aren’t accomplishing something that somebody else sees value in, then you are wasting your time.
